Can you extend, and for how long?
You can extend if you entered on the 30-day tourism visa exemption, or on a 30-day visa exemption under an agreement between Thailand and your country.1 Immigration gives you up to 30 more days, counted from the day your current stay ends.1 It can grant fewer days.5
Warning
You can extend only once.1 If you stay after your permission ends, the fine is 500 baht a day, up to 20,000 baht, and you can be banned from entering Thailand.6
| You entered on | Can you extend? |
|---|---|
| The 30-day tourism exemption (60 countries and territories, such as the US, the UK, EU states and Australia) | Yes, up to 30 days.71 |
| A 30-day agreement (China, Hong Kong, Kazakhstan, Laos, Macao, Mongolia, Russia, Timor-Leste, Vietnam) | Yes, up to 30 days.81 |
| A 90-day agreement (Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Peru, South Korea) | The tourism rule does not cover this entry.81 |
| A visa on arrival (now only Azerbaijan, Belarus and Serbia) | The rule does not name it. Bangkok takes these extensions at Counter K.910 |
Note
Nationals of Sri Lanka, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Iran, Nepal, Togo, Nigeria and Uganda get 7 days at most.311
30 days now, not 60
Since 15 September 2026, a visitor on the tourism visa exemption gets 30 days at entry, not 60.78 The 60-day exemption of 15 July 2024 is repealed.12 The exemption is now for tourism only: the repealed one also covered work and short business trips.12
If you entered on 60 days before 15 September 2026, you keep your 60 days.13 The extension order names exemptions of up to 30 days, and does not say if a 60-day entry can add 30 more.1 See what people report.
Why some people get only 7 days
The extension order has no rule that gives 7 days to a second visa-exempt entry.1 Two rules give 7 days:
- The 9 nationalities above get 7 days at most.3
- If immigration refuses your application, you must leave within 7 days of the day your stay ends.1
Since November 2025, the Immigration Bureau tells its provincial offices to refuse or cancel extensions for visitors who make repeated visa runs.14
The official limit of 2 a year applies to entries over a land border.7 Nationals of Malaysia, Brunei, Indonesia and Singapore have no such limit.7
What to bring
What to bring5 items
Immigration does not refund the fee, whether it approves your application or not.2
The official document list does not ask for a receipt, an onward ticket or proof of money.13 The is the address report that your hotel or landlord files. Chiang Mai asks for its receipt, so ask your hotel for a copy before you go. See what people report.
When and where to apply
Apply before your current stay ends. The extra 30 days count from the day your current stay ends, so an early application does not cost you days.1 No official page gives the first day you can apply. While immigration decides, you can stay, for up to 30 days after your stay ends.1
If you apply after your stay ends, you pay the overstay fine. If immigration then refuses you, you must leave within 7 days of the refusal.1
At an immigration office
You must hand in the yourself.2 Each immigration office serves its own area: the Bangkok office takes only people who stay in Bangkok.10
In Bangkok, go to Counter K, IT Square Lak Si, 3rd floor.10
Online
Apply on the VFS e-Extension site, which the Immigration Bureau links from its home page.15
- VFS lists the 30-day visa exemption under tourism.5
- You pay the 1,900 baht fee plus a VFS service fee. VFS currently charges 500 baht for each service speed.5
- After approval, you go to an immigration office to get the stamp in your passport. For tourism, that office can be different from the one you chose when you applied.5
The Immigration Bureau’s THIM app does not take extensions yet. The Bureau plans to add them.16
If you are refused or overstay
- If immigration refuses your application, you must leave Thailand within 7 days of the day your stay ends.1
- Staying after your permission ends is an offence: up to 2 years in prison, a fine of up to 20,000 baht, or both.17 Immigration settles it with a fine of 500 baht a day, up to 20,000 baht.6
- An overstay can bring an entry ban. If you give yourself up, an overstay of more than 90 days brings a 1-year ban, more than 1 year 3 years, more than 3 years 5 years, and more than 5 years 10 years.6
- If you are arrested, an overstay of up to 1 year brings a 5-year ban, and more than 1 year a 10-year ban.6

- Readers say Lak Si closes from 12 to 1 pm, takes only cash, and has shops on the same floor for photos and copies, for about 116 to 200 baht.18 They say to bring a pen, and that the forms are free at the document check.18
